The REDBOX Automated Convenience Store

-USA

In 2002-2003, objet designed, prototyped, and fabricated the REDBOX Automated Convenience Store and MovieMat Movie Rental Kiosk, for the McDonald's Corporation.

McDonald's Corporate gathered an international team of their best business minds to create a think-tank, posed with the task of coming up with new business ventures, and the group came up with 1,000 different ideas. The automated convenience store, popular in Japan and Belgium, was one of the two finalists.

The automated vending team, then going by the brand name Tik-Tok Easy Shop and later named

REDBOX, selected objet to design, prototype, and fabricate their first series of automated convenience stores that were field tested in Washington, DC and Maryland.

McDonald's Corporation later sold off the BigBox portion of the project (the convenience store) andexpanded their movie rental business, which now has over 22,000 REDBOX kiosks throughout the US.

The movie kiosk portion of the project was later sold to Coinstar, and New Zealand’s VTL Group Limited acquired the BigBox portion and redeveloped it as Shop24, which in the US can be seen as the Best Buy Express stores in airports everywhere.
